چکیده
In many cases grid extension is often highly costly and unlikely to happen – even in the mediumto long-term. In these scenarios, mini-grids (MG) could provide an ideal intermediary solution, especially for small towns or large villages where enough electricity can be generated to power household use, as well as local businesses. MGs provide centralized electricity generation at local level using the village's distribution network. When used in conjunction with renewable or hybrid systems, they can increase access to electricity, without undermining environmental factors. The mini grids are advantageous in remote areas to provide sustainable, reliable electricity and cost effective electricity. The paper covers the Indian energy scenario, renewable energy penetration in rural India, brief literature review, mini-grids (concept of MG, technologies deployment in MG, types of MG, merits and demerits). The paper also deals with the potential applications of MG in rural electrification and Indian initiatives of MG development in India.

Sustainability and Development Impacts of Off- Grid Electrification in Developing Countries an Assessment of South Africa's Rural Electrification Program
Previous studies have shown that provision of sustainable electricity supply to rural households is essential to bring development to off-grid populations. For this reason, most developing countries put large efforts into rural electrification programs to stimulate development and reduce poverty. However, to be sustainable these programs need to recover costs, which poses a challenge to remote ...
متن کاملPhotovoltaics for Rural Electrification in the People's Republic of China
Rapid growth in economic development, coupled with the absence of an electric grid in large areas of the rural countryside, has created a need for new energy sources both in urban centers and rural areas in China. The most critical need for rural electrification exists in northern and western China, where 80 million people had no access to grid electricity at the end of 1995. In February 1995, ...
متن کاملRural Electrification in India: Economic and Institutional aspects of Renewables
The paper assesses the demand for rural electricity services and contrasts it with the technology options available for rural electrification. Decentralised Distributed Generation can be economically viable as reflected by case studies reported in literature and analysed in our field study. Project success is driven by economically viable technology choice; however it is largely contingent on o...
متن کاملOptions for off-grid electrification in the Kingdom of Bhutan
Bhutan sells electricity across the border to India. However large sections of its population do not have access to electricity. The harsh mountainous terrain coupled with sparse and dispersed settlements in Bhutan makes grid extension difficult, costly and economically unviable. Therefore, it is worth looking at renewable energy options to meet electricity demand in remote locations. This stud...
متن کاملDrivers and barriers to rural electrification in Tanzania and Mozambique – grid extension, off-grid and renewable energy sources
Mozambique and Tanzania are countries with very low rural electrification rates – far below 5 % percent of the rural population use electricity. The pace of rural grid electrification is slow and for most remote areas access to the national electricity grids will not occur within a foreseeable future. Off-grid (decentralized) electricity grids are seen as a complement and fore-runner to the nat...
